Birchmount Garage

The 89500 square foot Birchmount garage is located west of Birchmount Rd. on the north side of Danforth Rd. Bus operations out of the garage began on June 1, 1956. It has indoor storage facilities as well as a staging area on the west side of the complex and an outdoor UWE storage area in the northwest corner of the property.  At present it serves routes: 8, 9, 12, 16, 17, 20, 22, 23, 24, 31, 57, 62, 64, 65, 69, 72, 81, 83, 87, 91, 92, 102, 113, 135, 143, 167, 300 (split with Eglinton, Mount Dennis and Queensway), 302, 322 and 324.  Currently, it houses 212 Orion VIIs (188 diesel, 24 NG diesel). The main building houses starting from the south: the body shop (1 track), the paint shop (1 track), 2 repair pits, a repair bay with 10 hoists, 2 more repair pits and 3 bus storage bays (bay 1 has 3 tracks, bay 2 has 6 tracks and bay 3 has 7 tracks). 

Here is a plan for the property before the UWE storage facility was built to the northwest of the main building and the indoor storage facility was expanded.

These are two aerial photographs of the Birchmount garage.  The first was taken in 1964 and the second in 1992.

The Birchmount Garage main building starting from the south side. The body shop and the paint shop were empty at the time, but repair pits 3 and 4 were occupied as were the hoists in the repair bay.  The bus bays 2 and 3 were completely empty while bay 1 was filled.
