Track
and bridge reconstruction
-
The
first two of several major track and bridge reconstruction projects in
2002 affecting the streetcar service on Queen Street, The Queensway,
and Lake Shore Boulevard, will begin. The Queen Street bridge over the
Don River will be reconstructed by the City of Toronto in a project
which will start in early April and finish in late August. During this
reconstruction, Queen Street will be closed to all traffic over the
Don River bridge. King Street will also be closed between River Street
and Queen Street. Service on the 501/301 Queen, 502
Downtowner, 503
Kingston Rd, 504 King routes will continue to be operated with
streetcars, but will be diverted away from the Don River bridge both
ways via Broadview, Dundas, and Parliament. During the busiest part of
the morning peak period, every second car on the 504 King route will
be diverted both ways via Broadview, Gerrard, and Parliament, instead
of via Broadview, Dundas, and Parliament, in order to reduce
congestion on Dundas Street. The 303 Don Mills overnight bus route
will be diverted via Dundas Street and River Street.
-
There
will be no replacement bus service for the Queen/Don River Bridge
project. As a result, there will be no service on Queen Street between
Broadview Avenue and Parliament Street, and no service on King Street
between Queen Street and Parliament Street. Customers will have to
walk to stops on Dundas Street, Parliament Street, or Broadview
Avenue.
-
At
the same time as the Queen/Don River bridge project begins, the TTC
will reconstruct the streetcar track on Lake Shore Boulevard between
Dwight Avenue and 17th Street. This project will begin in early April
and will finish in early May. As a result, 501/301 Queen and 508 Lake
Shore streetcars will operate as far west as Humber Loop only.
-
A
replacement 501/301 Queen bus service will operate between Long Branch
Loop and Humber Loop (the replacement bus service cannot be operated
to downtown, because of a shortage of buses). There will be a timed
transfer at Humber Loop overnight between 301 Queen streetcars and 301
Queen buses. Because buses cannot enter Humber Loop via the streetcar
tracks, the temporary bus service will operate in both directions via
Park Lawn Road and The Queensway.
-
There
will be no service on Lake Shore Boulevard between Park Lawn and
Humber Loop, and customers using stops on this section of the route
will have to walk to stops at Park Lawn and Lake Shore, or through the
pedestrian walkway into Humber Loop. All trips on the 508 Lake Shore
route will operate with streetcars as far west as Humber Loop only,
and 508 Lake Shore customers travelling beyond Humber Loop will have
to transfer to and from 501 Queen replacement buses.
