Service increase

Front-Esplanade

Route replaced
-
This route will be eliminated, and the last
day of operation will be Saturday, July 22, 2000. Service west of Union
Station will be replaced by the new 509 Harbourfront streetcar route, and
service east of Union Station will be replaced by an extension of the 72 Pape
bus route from Monday to Friday, and by an extension of the 65
Parliament bus
route on Saturdays.
-
With this change, service will be removed
from the section of Commissioners Street between Carlaw Avenue and Lakeshore
Garage, and customers using these bus stops can use the 72 Pape route at
Carlaw and Commissioners, or the 83 Jones route at Lakeshore Garage. Service
will be also removed from the section of Front Street between Yonge Street and
Spadina Avenue, and customers using these stops can use the frequent nearby
streetcar and subway services.
509
Harbourfront

New
route
-
This new streetcar route will begin
operation between Union Station and the Exhibition on Sunday, July 23, 2000.
From July 23 to September 4, 2000, the new route will operate from
approximately 6:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m., seven days a week. Streetcars will run
every four to eight minutes throughout the day and evening, and every 12
minutes early in the morning on Sundays.
-
Because of the City of Toronto construction
project on Spadina Avenue the 510
Spadina streetcar route will be
temporarily replaced with buses on Spadina Avenue from July 23 to September 2,
2000, and all service on Queens Quay will instead be provided by the 509 Harbourfront
streetcar route.
-
At most times of the day, all streetcars on
the route will operate on the 509 (Union Stn-Exhibition) branch. From 6:00
a.m. to approximately 8:00 a.m. (9:00 a.m. on Sundays) cars will operate only
as far west as Fleet Loop, on the 509 (Union Stn-Lake Shore & Bathurst)
branch. Customers travelling to and from the Exhibition early in the morning
can transfer to the 511/310 Bathurst service at stops along Fleet Street.
-
With the conclusion of the summer service
to the Exhibition and the conclusion of the construction project on Spadina
Avenue, the schedule on this route will be changed substantially after
September 4, 2000.

Summer weekend fare collection at Union
Station
-
With the start of service on the new 509
Harbourfront streetcar route, the special summer fare collection procedure
will be extended to include all of the eastbound streetcar stops on Queens
Quay, between Bathurst Street and Queens Quay Station.
On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays
until September 4, 2000, crash-gate collectors will be stationed at Union
Station, starting at 3:00 p.m. Customers who board streetcars at the eastbound
stops on Queens Quay at Bathurst Street, Portland Street, Spadina Avenue, Rees
Street, Simcoe Street, and York Street, and at the northbound platform at Queens
Quay Station, will enter the streetcars through any door and will not pay a fare
or be issued a transfer. Customers boarding cars at these stops will pay their
fares instead at the crash gate at Union Station. Normal pay-as-you-enter fare
collection and transfer-issuing procedures will be used at all other stops on
the 509 Harbourfront route.
All customers boarding eastbound
cars at the Exhibition and at the stops on Fleet Street will be issued
transfers, to be used as proof of payment if they travel to Union Station. This
fare collection procedure will be used up to and including Labour Day. From
Monday to Friday during the summer, and seven days a week after Labour Day,
normal pay-as-you-enter fare collection will apply at all stops.
37 Islington
Service increase
-
Service on the 37A (Islington
Stn-Humberwood via Rexdale and Woodbine Centre) branch will be increased
during the daytime and early evening on Saturdays and Sundays. Buses on the
37A branch will run every 15 minutes instead of every 20 minutes during the
daytime, and will run every 20 minutes instead of every 30 minutes in the
early evening. There will be no change to service on the 37 (Islington
Stn-Steeles) branch.
54 Lawrence East
Earlier trip
52 Lawrence West
and 58 Malton

Service increase
-
Service will be increased along
the busiest part of Lawrence Avenue, during the daytime on Saturdays. On the
58 Malton route, buses will run every 12 minutes east of Pearson Airport,
instead of every 25 minutes. On the 52 Lawrence West route, buses will
run every 12 minutes, instead of every 9 minutes. On the two routes together,
a combined six-minute service will be operated between Lawrence West Station
and Scarlett Road.
57 Midland

Schedule change
-
The schedule in the late evening on
Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays will be changed to be consistent with the
schedule that is operated from Monday to Friday. Buses will depart at the same
times on every day of the week.
72 Pape

Route extended
-
The 72 Pape route will be extended to Union
Station during the peak periods and midday from Monday to Friday. This
extension will replace the 121 Front-Esplanade
route east of Union
Station. Buses will serve the same stops on the Esplanade as are now served by
the 121 Front-Esplanade
route, and at Union Station will serve the bus
stop located on the south side of Front Street, just east of Bay Street.
-
This extended service will replace the
present 72A (Pape Stn-King via Commissioners) and 72C (Pape Stn-Cherry St via
Commissioners) branches. Buses to Union Station will run every 17 minutes in
the peak periods and every 24 minutes in the midday. The times of the first
and last trips at Union Station will be approximately the same as the first
and last trip times on the 121 Front-Esplanade
route. There will be no
change to service on Saturdays, Sundays, or holidays.
-
With this change, no scheduled service will
use the off-street loop at King Street & Parliament Street, and service
will be removed from the on-street loop on Villiers Street and Munition
Street.
-
The route will continue to operate with
accessible buses, and stops on the new extended service to Union Station will
be marked as accessible.

Spadina
Temporary bus replacement
-
Streetcar service on Spadina Avenue will be
replaced by buses from July 23 to September 2, 2000, because of the City of
Torontos project to remove the bollards on Spadina Avenue and replace them
with curbs and landscaped medians. The 510 Spadina route will be
temporarily changed to operate between Spadina Station and Queens Quay only,
and all service at Union Station and on Queens Quay will be provided by the
new 509 Harbourfront streetcar route.
-
During most times of the week, service will
operate on the 510 (Spadina Stn-Queens Quay) and 510 (Spadina Stn-King)
branches. During the afternoon peak period from Monday to Friday, in order to
avoid the heavy traffic congestion on Spadina Avenue south of King Street, the
route will be split, and separate service will operate on the 510 (Spadina Stn-King)
and 510 (King-Queens Quay) branches. Customers travelling south past King
Street will transfer between buses on Charlotte Street. Customers travelling
north past King Street will transfer between buses at the temporary northbound
stop on Spadina Avenue north of King Street.
-
The buses will operate in the regular
traffic lanes on Spadina Avenue, not on the streetcar tracks, and will serve
temporary bus stops in the curb lanes. North of Sussex Avenue, the buses will
operate on Spadina Avenue, and not into the streetcar tunnel, and will serve
the bus platform at Spadina Station. Buses will unload at the north platform
at the station, and will load in the easternmost platform on the south side of
the station.
-
Buses will run every
few minutes.
Additional time will be added to the schedules to reflect the slower operation
which will result from the temporary loss of use of the transit-only lanes.
Depending on the progress of the Citys
construction work, streetcar service may resume over part or all of the route
before September 2.
